Sanders’ AEW Rampage Review 4.1.22
Lee Sanders here! Busy, busy weekend! AEW RAMPAGE TIME! Let’s go!
Commentators: Excalibur, Ricky Starks, Chris Jericho, and Taz
MATCH 1: YOUNG BUCKS VS TOP FLIGHT
Match is underway as we jump into the action for this one, no entrances and all for this one. Darius Martin does a nice Manhattan drop to send Nick Jackson to the outside crashing into Brandon Cutler. Dante goes over the top rope crashing into Cutler and Bucks as the Elite members try to regroup on the outside. Jackson follows up with a superkick from out of nowhere to lay Dante out! Darius tries giving chase to Nick but is met by a superkick to the face by Matt Jackson. Action now goes back in the ring wheee Matt is on the offense. Matt throws Darius into the turnbuckle as it’s a modified buckle bomb as Nick follows up instantly with a kick to the back of Darius as we go into commercial break. And we are back as Darius gets a tag and he is coming in hot! Dante delivers a elbow strike to Matt, he goes to the rope rope but gets sent off it by Matt Jackson as he goes crashing badly to the outside. Darius and Nick are now going at it exchanging strikes inside the ring. High roundhouse kick by Darius misses but not his side kick to Jackson. Nick delivers a roundhouse kick that connects that sets him up for the BTE Trigger by the brothers as this one is over.
Winner:Young Bucks

Love me some Top Flight! These guys are just awesome and to see them mix it up with Young Bucks? Loving it! Now that Darius is back I’m expecting big things to happen for these guys in the future. To not see them as tag champions before the end of 2022 is going to have me wondering what’s going on?
Video package of the all-new, all-different Kris Statlander is shown. Sorry you all but this is as flat as my soda from three days ago. I need to throw it out already…
Dan Lambert is with Men of the Year and Paige VanZant as they are taking cheap shots at Orange Cassidy, Sammy Guverra, and Taya Conti. Lambert reiterates that Sammy is not getting a shot at Scorpio Sky’s TNT championship. Sammy and Conti appear on the screen as they are backstage. They destroy Lambert’s car and write graffiti on it to leave Team Lambert stunned inside the ring.
Tony Schiavone now is trying to interview HOOK. Danhausen interrupts as he’s trying to once again out the curse on HOOK but the man is not phased as he walks away. Too funny!
MATCH 2: HOUSE OF BLACK VS FUEGO DEL SOL, STU GRAYSON, EVIL UNO
House of Black is kicking major ass right now. Why this match is even going into a Picture in Picture break is beyond me. Back from commercial and Evil Uno gets a sit-up powerbomb on Malakai Black. Pin attempt by Uno but Brodie King sends Grayson crashing into the pin attempt to break it up. Match is continuing now as Brodie pretty much is cleaning house. He connects with a running senton from outside the ring and into Buddy and Malakai. Fuego gets inside now where he meets a rattled Malakai Black getting back inside the ring. Buddy and Brodie get back inside as Fuego is surrounded but for a moment as Grayson pulls Buddy out of the ring. Fuego gets a rollup on Malakai but it’s a kick out. Fuego plants Malakai on his dome but Malakai no sells it and connects with a roundhouse kick to end this one thankfully.
Winner:House of Black

Why this match even lasted as long as it did is beyond me. Appreciate them making this competitive and it was nice seeing Stu, Uno, and Fuego get in a little more offense than I anticipated. Decent little match.
Young Bucks challenge FTR to a match for AEW DYNAMITE. That’s going to be an instant classic!
MATCH 3: OWEN HART WOMEN’S TOURNAMENT QUALIFIER-SKY BLUE VS JAIME HAYTER
We begin with a lockup and a few reversals. Hayter gets Blue in the corner and gives her a few elbow strikes. Another series of reversals, nice armdrag by Sky Blue. Blue now has a headlock on Hayter and follows it up with a spinning leg scissors takedown. Blue charges at Hayter but runs into a high collar suplex. Hayter is ramming Blue into the corners, followed by a boot to the face. Hayter is totally dominating as Blue manages to get a rollup for a cover but it’s an automatic kick out. Hayter with a nasty spiked backbreaker. Blue landing in some shots on Hayter and a running knee strike to the face. Blue comes in with a spinning kick and goes for a cover, it’s not enough. Hayter delivers a big back drop driver. Stalling on Hayter’s part as she was thinking about her lariat but meets a kick to her face. Blue now heading up the ropes but Hayter takes advantage and is punching Blue as she delivers a back suplex followed by a brain buster! This is followed by her ripcore lariat to end this one.
Winner:Jaime Hayter
Rating: **
Sky Blue, she is a pretty woman is she not folks? Lord have mercy and the girl has skills. This may have been a losing effort but Blue continues to win me over each time I see her. I’ve followed her work first in NWA and been a fan of hers ever since. She needs more tv time as I feel she’s more than ready. As far as this match though? It went as expected and the right person went over.
MATCH 4: KEITH LEE VS POWERHOUSE HOBBS
Lot of stalling here as the two men are trying to sell this moment to the fans. We got a lockup and it’s a stalemate as they both release their holds. Hobbs wants to go again and they lock up. It’s another stalemate but they lockup again and this go round Hobbs gets in a headlock. Lee is sent into the ropes and we have both men doing shoulder tackles on each other but neither men is budging. Both men go again and this time Lee gets the advantage as he sends Hobbs out the ring. During break Hobbs managed to turn the tides on Lee as we find him punching Lee followed by a lariat on him. Hobbs now has Lee’s face in-between the ropes but Lee comes back with overhead chops. Hobbs misses a strike as Hobbs drops him right on his back. Cover attempt made and Hobbs kicks out. Hobbs catches Lee as he bounces from off the ropes and into his arms for a quick release powerslam. Hobbs is waiting for Lee in his corner and charges at him but misses. Lee tosses him like a bag of potatoes and follows up with a headbutt to Hobb’s forehead. Ricky Starks races down the ring and tries to hit Lee with a steel chair. Lee punches the chair out of his hands as Starks looks on shocked. Swerve Strickland yanks Starks off the apron as Hobbs comes from behind striking Lee. Hobbs with a pin attempt but ref was focused on the action outside. Hobbs demands him to come inside as he tries picking up Lee. Keith Lee comes from out of nowhere with the Big Bang Catastrophe to pick up the win.
Winner:Keith Lee

This played out very well. Hobbs is getting better and better. Pacing, footwork, timing, everything with this man is evolving. This is best I’ve seen Hobbs and this feud is doing him justice. I loved how both men was booked here as it was like watching Doomsday facing Juggernaut if you know your comics. AEW doing alright with the way they’ve been booking Lee so far as it’s been less talk, more action from him. I’m okay with that.
Starks and Swerve still going at it on the outside. Starks connects with a Roahambo on Swerve through a table. Starks tries to go inside the ring and take a steel chair to Lee but he shoulder tackles Starks down. Hobbs hits Lee from behind with that same steel chair from earlier. Starks hits Lee over the head with the heel of his dress shoe in hand as the two on one attack is just too much for Lee.

THE FINAL SCORE: REVIEW
VERY GOOD
Singles action, tag team action, trios tag action, mens action and womens action. This was a nice variety we got this week. I’ve been wanting to see more of Danhausen on tv and it legit put a smile on my face to see him. I am aware of some videos online with him and HOOK and I love it. They have good chemistry so to see this play out on tv is a welcomed change of pace. Where this quirky relationship leads to is behind me but I’m all for the comedic relief. Hobbs, Swerve, Starks, and Lee continue intertwining and overlapping and it’s been built solid so far. Can’t forget about Top Flight as they can truly be a breakout team of the year in due time. Dark Order is even doing good these days! Feel like I’m in bizzaro world! For those checking out Wrestlemania weekend, I’ll be doing post shows covering fallout, even the Hall of Fame.
